“No.”

“Aw, come on, Uncle Mer!” Madison whined.

“Yeah,” John piped up, “come on, Uncle Mer!”

Rodney glared at them both and crossed his arms obstinately. “There is no way in he-” (Jeanie punched him in the arm. Hard. He turned the glare on her.) “-aven that you can convince me to go in there!”

“Please?” Madison begged. Rodney’s glare softened a bit when he saw her pout. But then he took another look at her Little Mermaid bathing suit (complete with mermaid tail and faux seashell bikini top) and Nessie (the purple dragon-headed tube around her waist) and snapped out of it.

“Forget it! I have better things to do than traipse around the yard with you three and get myself soaked!”

“Just once, Rodney,” John bargained. “Just one time and then we can all go in, towel off and change clothes.”

Rodney raised his chin mutinously.

“It’ll make her happy, Mer,” Jeanie added, and smiled winningly at him.

Oh, no, they were appealing to his sensitive side!

“But - the water! I’ll chafe,” he tried to argue, but John turned that smile on him (the one with the teeth and the crinkly eyes - the one Rodney had never been able to resist) and he found his arms dropping to his sides in defeat.

“Fine. Fine! One time, and that’s it.”

Madison squealed and beamed up at him. She grabbed his hand and started dragging him across the yard to where she, Jeanie and John had been playing for the better part of the afternoon.

“The trick is,” she explained, completely unnecessarily because, hello, Rodney had been a kid once, himself, “to jump through when it’s moving away from you, not towards you - you get wetter that way.”

Madison leapt in first, and then Rodney closed his eyes and stepped into the arc of the sprinkler.
